It is a Good Time!

So, here we are almost at the end of another week. We are enjoying the weather so much and it really shows. Sweet corn, who doesn’t like sweet corn? We planted are early corn this week and can’t wait until it is ready. You take a chance of loosing it this early to late frost, however if you don’t then you usually have a nice crop and soon. Did a lot of thinning and transplanting in the greenhouse this week. Getting ready to set out those more summer crops in just a few weeks.

As many of you know, we had a lot of problems with the large amount of rainfall we received this winter. Our farm layout consists of a 2 miles long dirt driveway that just saw way to much rain that we had to close farm tours much of the winter. We’ll with all this beautiful weather we are almost dried out and we have been working on the road and it will be open again shortly. I will definetly post when we are open to tours again.

All our chicks are growing like weeds, we have a mama sow ready to have babies soon, and all the grass seems to be turning green right in front of us. It is a good time!

Our weekend

So, we got quite a few little projects completed this weekend. We mostly worked with the livestock and their pastures, however we did finish up some fencing on one of the fields we planted last week. Their are a lot of critters around here that like fresh veggies as much as we do and part of our job is to keep them out of the fields. Soon it will be market season and we are working on little details that makes handling the livestock a little easier. Such as watering, feeding, housing, pastures, etc. Also kidding season will be upon us shortly. That is our favorite time when brand new baby goats come into the world. Their is not much cutier except maybe baby pigs, ducklings, chicks, calves. We like them all!

Planting

Well it seems there is to much updating that needs to be done to catch the blog up to where we are now in the early season. Starting plants in the greenhouse, field preparation, planning, livestock, newly hatched chicks, etc. So, I am just going to begin with this week.

So, Monday and Tuesday, we had over 150 chicks hatch. The majority of chicks are red sex link that we will use later as laying hens. They are always so cute and this is a favorite for our family.

Yesterday, Wednesday, March 17th was such a good day. With all the beautiful weather, we really got a lot accomplished. We planted 3 types of potatoes, salad mix, more turnips, more cabbage, more onions, radishes, 2 types of lettuce, carrots, and I know I am missing a few. Come on Spring!
